Rattlesnakes can be found in a variety of habitats in Humboldt County. Rattlesnake bites are a veterinary emergency! As summer approaches we begin to plan river trips, hikes, and camping trips increasing our chances of running across a rattlesnake. Having your dog vaccinated can give you more time to seek veterinary care in case of an unexpected emergency.
The rattlesnake vaccine does not fully prevent your dog from being affected by rattlesnake venom. The vaccine is designed to stimulate your dog’s immunity and help defend against harmful agents in rattlesnake venom. Even with the vaccine on board, a rattlesnake bite is a veterinary emergency and you should seek immediate assistance at the nearest animal hospital.
The rattlesnake vaccine needs to be boosted 3 weeks after the initial inoculation for a total of two vaccines. After the two initial vaccines, it should be boosted annually.
